Faces

Hunger affects a wide range of individuals and they all deal with its pains in a different way.

They are mothers tucked away in the suburbs with empty fridges or elderly individuals trying to stretch their Social Security to the end of the month. Each has their own cross to bear, including an HIV-positive man who is balancing the many definitions of treatment, and a veteran fighting a new battle at home.

Costs

When it comes to the national deficit, stimulus package and farm bill, many people are left scratching their heads and asking for a Money 101.

Here The Hungry DC digs into how politics and money propel a downward spiral of food insecurity that impacts person’s time, to how someone goes grocery shopping to a mother’s access to diapers. Sometimes it is not Congress but the weather that leaves D.C. residents without a meal. All is costly physically, fiscally and mentally.

Community

D.C. communities tackle hunger together. Their actions range from bringing people closer to the earth with gardens and closer to their health through nutrition programs and healthy recipes.

However, The Hungry DC Reporting Team also found that these grassroots efforts extend beyond the neighborhood into the bright lights of professional sports with Washington athletes addressing hunger and homelessness.

Workers

A lot of the paperwork done to solve hunger in the nation is done behind closed doors in Congress, but
sometimes also behind the scenes in D.C. to distribute pallets of food throughout the capital. Some organizations seek to increase residents’ access to healthy foods while others fill the hours, days and weeks that children are out of school.

At the end of the day, it comes down to policy, which determine the ways forward for these organizations and the solutions that they can offer.
